Jonathan Sandmel	ARTIST'S STATEMENT My work explores how a painting's outer shape can be just as active and energetic as its contents. I work with a vocabulary of broken, tilted and rounded shapes to deny the square its stronghold in painting. My intention is to engage the viewer with symbols and metaphors, but I cannot say that my paintings are truly about any one thing. It's a combination of meanings and non-meanings, color and shape, presence and absence that create a moving visual experience.

About the Artist: Jonathan Sandmel is an artist who loves to explore shape and color. With his vibrantly colored, precisely hard-edged and uniquely un-square paintings, he expresses beauty, modernity and a sly wit: "I love to build things and I try to incorporate as much sculpture and carpentry as painting in my work. I am interested in exploring the fine line between science and art, so I like my execution to be precise, more engineered than extemporaneous." Jonathan studied Journalism at the University of Missouri. He worked in advertising in France and St. Louis until moving to Santa Fe, New Mexico in early 2000 where he reconnected with his love of painting. He began graduate studies in painting in 2003 at the Savannah College of Art and Design and received the Zorensky Fellowship for Fine Arts in 2004. In March of 2005 Jonathan was accepted to the painting program at the University of New Mexico where he received a teaching assistantship for fall 2005. He currently lives and works in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
